Sunday night we went to hear Brent Vernon in concert at a local Baptist Church. Brent Vernon and I have known each other our entire lives. Brent's older sister, Sonja and I were in the same class and went from Kindergarten to 12th grade together. Most of that was spent living on the same street as each other. I have watched Brent grow from a tiny little guy who was interested in everything art and characters to a very successful musician/ventriloquist/artist/songwriter/amongst other things. He is very talented and uses all his talents for God. He travels year around and does concerts in church's and schools and is excellent at connecting to everyone from kids to old people. You can see all about what Brent does from his schedule to buying his CD's on his web site www.BrentVernon.com.Bryce first heard Sam's Songs at our college bookstore while waiting for a ride home from school from Mrs. Predmore (Tara Hydes' mother who runs the bookstore). He told me about it when he got home and sang me one of the songs on the CD called "Bad Driver". Sam is Brent Vernon's dummy. As you can see in the picture he is a cute little boy and Brent is excellent at making Sam come to life. Sam has a whole CD of songs that he "sings" with Brent's help. Bryce got the CD for his birthday on Thursday and has listened to it several times since then. When I told Bryce that I knew Mr. Brent and Sam and could introduce them to him, his eyes started dancing and he got very excited. I told him that we were going to go see them Sunday night and he could hear Sam sing in person and then meet him afterwards. He started jumping up and down and clapping and putting his fists in the air saying "YES" over and over.
So Sunday night, Brent did his concert, brought Sam out and did a dialogue and two songs with him and the kids loved it and were bopping to the music and laughing. After the service was over, and once Brent was done talking to the majority of the people, I introduced Bryce to Brent and he asked if he could meet Sam and take a picture with him. Brent was more than happy to oblige and wanted a picture of it himself.
After the picture was done Brent just sat there and had Sam have a whole conversation with Bryce. I really wish I had it all on video. Bryce doesn't get that Sam wasn't real. (Even though both Brent and I tried to explain to him that Sam lives in a suitcase and isn't like the rest of us are. That wasn't really important to Bryce and he really could have cared less about that fact. He just liked Sam and that was all that mattered.) He asked Sam a lot of questions, never once realizing that Brent was the one making Sam do the talking. When Sam would ask a question, Bryce answered right back to Sam, never Brent. Brent would ask a question to Bryce and Bryce would answer Brent, but then immediately afterwards would pat Sam's arm and say "Sam" and then proceed to ask him another question. It was so cute to watch and since then, Sam is a celebrity to the little six year old in this house. I don't know how many times I have heard "I love Sam, I am so glad he is now my friend."
Thanks Brent, for making one little boy very happy and taking time away from others to give him is own little special time with the famous Sam.
