When I walked into the Mother/Daugher banquet Saturday night, I was immediately pulled aside and asked if I could please say something about my Mom and without hesitation I said yes!! Why? Not because I love getting up in front of groups and speaking, because I don't, even though it isn't something that really bothers me that much if I feel like they are friends and if my mood is right. But I said "Yes!" immediately because I feel like my Mom is someone that deserves being talked about and telling the world what a great person and Mother she is. I had to keep it short and had a short time to prepare, so here is what I said...
"My Mother, in my opinion, is the very best Mother of four girls, the best mother-in-law to four guys and the best Grandmother to twelve Grandkids, this is including our adopted family of course.
She is constantly giving, completely selfless, and always helpful. Just a few examples are..
When we were growing up our home was called the Olsen Hilton because very often a person needed a place to stay, so one of us girls would give up our room for them and my Mother would be the perfect hostess.
If anyone needs anything done, my Mom would step up to the plate, get it all organized and make sure it was finished, without complaint or question.
I will be the first to admit that during my teenage years, I gave my Mother every gray hair on her head, but she never gave up on me and continued to love me and pray for me and I know she continues to do that still to this day.
The things Steve and I have gone through with Connor, we would have never made it without our whole family, but my Mother made trip after trip with me to Miami, was there to cry with us through the bad times and rejoice with us during the good times. I could continue to talk for a long time and continue to sing the praises of my Mom, but since time is limited. I just want to say that I love you Mom and thank you for everything you've done for me and for everything you are. Happy Mother's Day!"
Here is some things I want to add...
I don't ever remember needing my Mom and telling her so that she told me no, and I have needed my Mom a LOT over the last few years. She will even go so far as to tell me that she will cancel this trip or these plans if I need her. She is the ultimate pinch-hitter in every situation. If I needed her to take care of Bryce, Alex and Jessica so Brenda could go with me to Miami or this doctor's appointment or that place, no problem. If I needed her to go with me instead, no problem. Whatever I needed, she would make it happen and try to make things as comfortable as possible. She basically moved with me to Miami for those two months at the beginning of Connor's life. She would make sure I was eating, and keep things cleaned up and if I needed anything she would do it. When she comes here to my house to babysit, I will come home to not only find the boy's happy and very well cared for, but all laundry done and folded, dishwasher unloaded and loaded, etc. She does so many special things for her children and grandchildren.
She is also a behind the scenes person who does so many things for other people, for the church or school. My Mom will write a card to someone that she feels might need some encouragement or someone who does a lot of things that probably don't get much thanks. She works many hours for no money and not much appreciation for Campmeeting and TLC. When we were growing up she had constant company for delicious meals, even though she doesn't like to cook, but rarely got invited to other people's house herself.
Like I said, I could go on and on with example after example of the ways that I admire my Mom. I am so thankful for the Mother that God blessed my life with and she makes me strive to be a better person and Mom as well.
